Is there going to be an official skin ability for this program?

Yes, 1.0 does not allow skinning, but this ability should be available in version 1.1. Also, it should be relatively easy to create and custom your own skins.

The thing is, though, I don't know yet when 1.1 will be released. Stay tuned.

Is it possible to add a list of parameters to the application being invoked in Menu Inventor? This would make it much more useful for my situation, as I often call the same application with different parameters and need two or more entries for each instance.

Also, it would be VERY handy if we could designate Folder shortcuts to cascade out in menu inventor, rather than opening a windows Explorer window for the folder. Makes folder navigation possible entirely within Menu Invetor.

Great app!

Hi user,

yes, parameter passing will be possible in the next release, in Menu Inventor 1.1. Also, the second feature you are talking about, is going to be implemented in some future versions as 'folder reference' and will have the described functionality. Unfortunately, it is not yet included in the 1.1 development.

Please be patient and thanks for using our freeware Wink.

I just downloaded and installed version 1.1. However, anything I choose from the right click menu results in the error: "Run-time error 429. ActiveX component can't create object." I found information on your site about downloading comdlg32.ocx and reg_component.bat (though if I understand correctly, this issue should be resolved in 1.1). When I run the batch file, I get the error: "comdlg32.ocx was loaded, but the DllRegisterServer entry point was not found. The file cannot be registered."

I installed Menu Inventor on another computer, and it worked just fine. After looking around, I found that there is another comdlg32.ocx (different version, date, and size) in c:\windows\system32 on the first computer, but no such file on the second computer. Could the presence of two OCX files be causing the problem? How can I resolve this?

Thanks in advance!

I think I was able to fix this problem, as follows:

1. I found the program that was using the comdlg.ocx in windows\system32 and uninstalled it.
2. I uninstalled Menu Inventor.
3. I renamed the comdlg.ocx in windows\system32
4. I reinstaled Menu Inventor. It didn't get the 429 error when I ran it and seems to be working.
5. I reinstalled the first program manually. When I tried to run it, it said that comdlg.ocx was missing or corrupt.
6. I copied comdlg32.ocx from the Menu Inventor directory to windows\system32.
7. Now the original program runs and MI continues to run!

I haven't test either program extensively, but getting past the start up is a good sign!

Hi Kim,

I am really sorry that this error is still around and that you had to hit it. Can I please ask what version of Windows are you running? Based on this, I might be able to tell you what other files might be missing or outdated. You could also try in the meantime copying the newer version of comdlg32.ocx over the older one in C:\Windows\system32 if it is possible.

Thanks for warning us and please keep in touch. Thanks!

You are too fast Smile, I shouldn't have taken so much time typing the answer. Anyways, please check that your problem with Menu Inventor (selecting items from right click context menu) doesn't come up again and that your first program is not all crashed up. It is possible that there was a cross-conflict or cross-something going on with both of the comdlg32.ocx files.

Please let me know how it all worked out. Thanks again!

Is there an easy way to reorder items within a menu? I can't get drag and drop to work at all, so right now I have to cut and paste each item to the new location (above or below other items in the menu).

I'd just like to add that I am so excited about using this program! I have two student labs with dozens and dozens of applications. I've been looking all over for an easier way for users to find and launch applications. I even tested commercial programs that would have cost us some big bucks, but none of them delivered what I wanted. Menu Inventor is perfect (if we can resolve the drag and drop issue!) for our needs - and at a price we can afford!

Thanks!

I guess I should add that we're running Win XP SP2, fully patched. I'm using right-click-hold to try to drag.

I have written to Kim personally, but for others: For normal drag and drop inside a pane, use left-click-hold, if you want to drop a menu item into a different menu, right-click-hold is the magic stroke combination to use. Hope this helped Wink.

Is ther a maximum number of entries for the menu.mxf file?

Thanks!

Yes, there indeed is a limit. The number of possible entries is currently limited to 400, the number of nodes is 500.

But why is it limited ?Doesn't make any sense..can anyone explain ?

Hai
Hai's picture
30 December, 2007 - 13:59

This is because the upper bound on the array of entries is hard-coded and does not change at all. I will try to look into this, but there currently is no specific reason to make the upper-bound dynamic, as the limit is already high enough (I'd say, contradict me if I am wrong) and the impact on memory use is minimal.

Hope this addresses your concern.

the font size is so small it is hard to read. is their a way to increase the font size?

Hi,

you can manually change the font size by digging into the .mig file. It is a regular text file, which you can open in say notepad. You should recognize the font size setting immediately, it is located on the line starting with "f".

I don't know which skin you are using, so if you wish, you can send me the appropriate .mig file and I will edit it for you.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

I have lost the default font in the sub-menus and the modify/insertion screen. The main category titles in the main menu are OK......I checked the .mig files, they seem OK. The problem exists regardless of which skin I use.

I have modified the KDE skin for example and the font changed in the main menu but no where else. I have also tried uninstalling and reinstalling the program and the same barely readable fancy font still remains in the sub-menus and modification screen. I do not know what this font is or where it is coming from. How can I get the default font to work again?

thanks

I'm with tonyh on this one. Why can't the trigger be under the windows? Even better, an option to replace the start menu with the trigger entirely would resolve the default location problem and allow for more natural operation. just a thought...

I shall add these features to the request list:

  • option to make trigger non-modal (i.e. not float above all windows)
  • remove the trigger altogether and place the response on the start menu (if possible)

Great program! I have a couple of questions.

1. Is the location of the main icon configurable, that is, can I put it somewhere other than near the lower left corner?
2. Is there a startup parameter to have the menu open up when I start the program as if I pressed the icon?
3. Is the size of the icon preset, that is, does it have to be 48x48?

Thanks,

Hai

Hello Ken,
Answers to your questions:
1. Sure, just click on the icon and drag it somewhere else.
2. Unfortunately, no. As soon as you launch the application, it will close the menu. I will soon add a keyboard shortcut, that will keep the menu open.
3. Sorry, the size of the icon is preset. New version has a feature that resizes the icon to 16x16.

Thanks for the quick response,

Concerning the icon location, I was thinking more of whether the location was configurable in terms of where it comes up initially (an option to let it be as it is now or place it in a specific spot would be desirable).
For reasons that I won't go into, I would like it in the middle of the screen at startup.
I realize that this could create a problem since it is "always on top", which brings another question to mind. Is the "always on top" property configurable (that would be desirable also).

Thanks,

Hai

Sadly, none of the above are possible in the 1.1 version. However, as many people have requested these features (especially to be able to specify startup position and disable "always on top"), and 1.2 is nowhere near being finished, I will soon be releasing a patch, that will implement the above features.

If you have enabled follow-up notification, I can notify you of when this new patch will be released.

In response to your comment, I completed a patch, that addresses issues you have outlined in your comment. I would be grateful if you could install this patch and see if you are satisfied with it. The patch is here: http://micron.me.uk/mi/patch-1.11

Any issues with this patch you can discuss at http://micron.me.uk/forum/menuinventor/patch1.11

Thank you Wink.

I had a couple of new questions.

Is a more recent version of the source availabe (later than the mi_1.1rc1-source)? If so, maybe I could figure out the answers without having to bother you.

I am having a problem with the number of nodes. When I create entries beyone around 97 and save it, when I reload, the entries are there, but the nodes are not so that they do not show up in the menu. Even when I manually enter the nodes in the menu.mxf, if I start MI they are there, but when I save, the nodes are not saved. (these entries are in a sub-menu).

Also, I am having trouble figuring out how to correctly extend the width of the menus so that my titles are not clipped.

Thanks,

Ken

Hi Ken,

due to some unwise design choices during coding of 1.1, there actually is an upper bound on the number of Entries and Nodes, however, it is around 400 Sad . Please, if you agree, send me the offending .mxf file and I'll have a look at it.

As to the width of the menus, it is unfortunately fixed throughout Menu Inventor, but you can still change it: First, check what skin you are using (right-click on the trigger to expand it and click the cog to bring the Settings window. The skin file has a .mig ending. (e.g.: kde-gold.mig). Locate that file in your installation folder (usually C:\Program Files\Menu Inventor) and open it in a text editor. Add the line "g,0,your preferred width in pixels" (e.g. "g,0,222") as the second line in the file and save. Restart Menu Inventor.

You can find the source code of 1.1 at https://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=165589&package_id... . Feel free to dig around.

Good luck!

At the end of this message is a representative version of my menu.mxf.
If it is loaded and then saved, nodes for entries 91, 93, and 97-101 get left out.

Also, If I do change the g line, I think that I also have to edit the bitmaps to be the same size. Seems like alot of trouble, so for now I will try to shorten my titles.

Thanks,

Ken

I've replied to Ken personally, but for those out there with a similar problem, you can download the file below, rename it to Menu Inventor.exe and place it inside your installation folder. This will soon be released as a regular patch, but for now, follow these instructions to fix it manually Wink.

The patch appears to work great for the problem I was seeing.
Thanks.
You work fast!

I did not get the personal response, but if you sent some attachments like a .zip, it might have been filtered by my email.

I am curious what the problem was, I could not see anything in the code (but I am not that familiar with VB). The only thing I was wondering is if a "New" does not clear out the memory and risidual data existed.

Thanks again,

Ken

If you really have to know Razz , the offender here was NodeQueue, which is used to store nodes during traversal of the tree when saving. The size of the queue was too small and failed silently without warning. I bumped up its size and should work now Wink
